Modern slavery has been in the spotlight more than ever, following the release of the new Global Slavery Index and the U.S. Department of State’s Trafficking in Persons report. Also, the pressure surrounding companies affected by the U.K. Modern Slavery Act to produce their statements and publicly declare the actions they are taking to address slavery has increased dialogue about exactly how engaged and committed the private sector is when it comes to addressing modern slavery.

These last few months the Mekong Club has continued to push the modern slavery agenda forward and engaging with new businesses in Hong Kong and beyond.

Matt Friedman, our CEO, just ended his 70-day speaking tour across North America on a one-of-a-kind advocacy mission (please click here for full article). He visited over 27 cities holding a total of 112 seminars for businesses, associations and government organisations in an amazing effort to bring awareness on the topic of modern slavery driving dialogue and – most important – collaboration.

Collective action to create and implement industry-wide strategies is indeed at the core of the Mekong Club’s work. The team have been working with our industry leaders in the Financial Services, Apparel &Footwear and Retail networks to develop industry specific tools that tackle the greatest roadblocks to remediating slavery and will help to change the way companies are doing business.
